The Impact of Funding Gaps on our IVDD Research

Friends and supporters,

Today's post brings a mix of excitement and concern. We are thrilled by the overwhelming response to our recent call for DNA samples from IVDD-screened dachshunds. The support, with nearly 150 requests for DNA kits, is a testament to your dedication to our IVDD research. This research holds the promise of a brighter future for dachshunds everywhere, and your participation is invaluable.

However, I must also share some difficult news. The looming possibility of redundancies within the Canine Genetics Centre (CGC) at Cambridge University casts a shadow over our progress. These potential cuts would have a direct and significant impact on our IVDD research efforts.

The Critical Role of the CGC

To illustrate the potential consequences, let's consider the recent influx of DNA kit requests. Each request, and the subsequent logging of samples when they are returned, is handled by CGC team member Bryan McLaughlin. Bryan's expertise and tireless efforts are essential to the success of this project. The loss of his expertise would create a bottleneck in the research pipeline, slowing down progress and potentially jeopardising the entire project.

The Ripple Effect

The impact of these funding gaps extends far beyond Bryan's individual role. CGC research is a collaborative effort, and the loss of any team member disrupts the delicate balance they have established. It also sends a discouraging message to other dedicated volunteers and supporters, who have invested their time, energy, and resources in the work of the CGC.

Your Support Matters

Dr Cathryn Mellersh and the CGC team are committed to exploring every avenue to secure the necessary funding to continue their vital work. Your continued support, whether through donations, spreading awareness, or participating in our research, is more crucial than ever. Together, we can overcome these obstacles and continue our pursuit of a future where we have significantly reduced the threat of IVDD to our beloved dachshunds.

Thank you for your unwavering support.
